Whisky brand Whyte and Mackay has welcomed the deal made in China to protect whisky produced in Scotland being sold in the country.

Yesterday an agreement was reached that only Scottish produced whisky would be marketed as Scotch within the expanding Chinese market.

It is hoped that by giving Scotch a geographical status, sales of Scottish whisky will double in the country.

A spokesperson for Whyte and Mackay, commented on the news: "Anything that protects and reinforces the unrivalled provenance and heritage of the Scotch whisky industry must be welcomed."

The spokesperson also said that the rising price of malt is like to raise the cost of whisky production.

“This may have a knock on effect on the prices paid by consumers,” they explained. “But the prices are set by the retailers so it will be difficult to determine what the exact impact will be."
