The GoldenTwit Awards has launched a Twitter petition to persuade Stephen Fry to return to return to micro-blogging site which he quit earlier this year.

Fry chose to quit the platform that he has championed for several years now with his final tweet simply saying ‘bye bye’, following a newspaper article which misinterpreted his comments on women and sexuality caused controversy.

Fry has since said that his comments were misinterpreted and that they were made as a joke, he then chose to withdraw from Twitter on 31 October.

The GoldenTwit Awards, for which Fry is nominated for the second successive year, has now begun a campaign to persuade him to reconsider. The petition is being hosted by the website Twitition, which was created by Leeds-based Branded3 and is also a GoldenTwits nominee this year. Since its inception it has attracted 1.5m signatures across 48,000 petitions.

In a statement on the website that explained why people should sign its petition The GoldenTwits said:

"The Twitterverse is not the same without its Crown Prince. It’s like Champagne without bubbles, Hello without Brangelina, or – when he’s in a strop – gout without the pain.

"Twitter without Stephen Fry is simply not right. It’s downright unnatural. He’s the most loved and lovey (a word of his own making) Member of The British Academy of Twits, and hot favourite for a gong at the GoldenTwits, so it’s crucial for twitterers everywhere that he bring his dancing thumbs back to the QWERTY keypad of real-time life.

"We understand, Stephen, why you are hurt (…okay then, fucking pissed off) but please don’t take it out on your faithful followers. We beseech you to tweet us right once again."

The GoldenTwits results will be announced on November 25.
