MRUK Research, the social research function owned by The Cello Group is set to scale back its operations in a move which will also see the departure of longstanding MD, James Law.

The company is set to make the cuts due to the public sector budget reductions made by the Public Sector, and will see the closure of its offices in Glasgow, Bristol, Cardiff and Newcastle, although offices in London and Manchester will remain open with regional director Rachel Cope taking the reigns.

James Law (pictured), who will leave the company after 18 years, said; β€œIt is an incredibly sad decision to have to make, but it was not a difficult one. The change in Government brought a series of Policy changes moving from mandatory research gathering to discretionary, across a raft of areas including Police Forces, Local Authorities, NHS, Housing Associations. These are core areas for us and in the current climate discretionary means cancelled. The recent reduction in the number of quangos has also lost us clients and reduced the number of buying points.”

The departure of Law coincides with the end of the buy-out period following the sale of MRUK to Cello Group in 2007.

Law continued β€œI am sad to be moving on, but really pleased that Rachel Cope, Regional Director, will be leading the slimmed down operation and continuing with a number historic clients. Cello is a fantastic group, with a number of first class companies.”

Ahead of the reduction in staff over the coming month, MRUK will look to complete the project and fulfil its existing commitments, while Law says that he is considering a number of options and is likely to stay within the industry.

A spokesperson for Cello Group said that there were no plans that they were aware off for further cut backs within the group.
