Regional development agency Yorkshire Forward has announced that it is to enter into a consultation period having today made 100 people redundant.

Following the public sector spending review this week, the regional development agency for Yorkshire has axed around 100 members of staff ahead of closing in the first quarter next year.

At the time of writing there was no answer at the organisation, so it was unclear whether the communications or marketing departments had been affected.

Yorkshire Forward, which had 450 staff at the beginning of this year, is the organisation tasked with bringing investment to the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Chancellor George Osborne announced that several regional development agencies would close next year following his first budget, as part of his measures to offset the UK’s economic defecit.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Forward said: “Yorkshire Forward invited staff to apply for voluntary redundancy in August and the date, set by the Cabinet Office, for the last day of service for staff leaving under this scheme is today, Friday October 22.

“These are very difficult times and our focus is both on ensuring our staff are supported and that we can continue to safely deliver what is still a multi-million pound programme of work throughout 2010/11 and an orderly transition, until our closure date of March 2012.”

The axed RDA’s will be replaced by Local Enterprise Partnerships.
