A bid by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s image maker’s to present the leader as happily married has backfired after his wife removed her wedding ring for a staged census audit.

Sitting uncomfortably in matching beige outfits on a beige sofa the couple attempted to present an image of contentment to watching press.

The 11min grilling took place in a spartan room with nothing but an old TV for decoration, suggesting that the surroundings were intended to accentuate Putin’s man of the people image.

Little sign of intimacy was shown during the video with Putin choosing to lavish attention on his pet Labrador, Connie, instead.

It comes as press speculation suggested that Putin had become involved with former Olympic gymnast, Alina Kabaeva, 27, although Putin denies the allegations.

Putin’s spokesman, Dmitri Peskov later advised that it was not “obligatory” in Russian Orthodox tradition for couples to wear wedding rings.
