Following a tender launched earlier this year, it appears that Tangent Graphic has been appointed by the Commonwealth Games following its hunt for a creative design agency.

The tender will see Tangent now handle creative design services, online and offline application and the development and application of creative guidelines over time and across disciplines and channels, as originally advertised.

A spokesperson for the Commonwealth Games confirmed that the shortlist of companies for the contract also included 999, O Street, D8 and McCann Erickson. However, McCann Erickson declined to pitch.

They also confirmed that the main work for Tangent, alongside several other programmes, was the design of the 2014 Pictograms, used to represent each of the sports featured in the Games.

Glasgow-based Marque created the original designs for the Glasgow Games.

Since the decision, however, one of the unsuccesful agencies, D8, has posted a blog on its website, showing its creative work produced for the pitch. The blog post reads: "We don’t exactly enjoy public sector procurement processes but the lure of designing pictograms, among other things, for an international sporting event was too great for us to ignore. We made it to the shortlist for providing creative design services for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It was a case of close but no cigar for us, however we believe our submission was of sufficient creative merit to publish here…"

The post has been picked up by a number of design blogs over the weekend, igniting a debate about what you can (and can't) do with pitch work that didn't get chosen.

When approached by The Drum for a comment on the blog post, D8 declined to comment further.
