Research in Motion, manufacturer of the BlackBerry, are rumoured to be preparing the way for the launch of an iPad rivalling tablet computer.

No details have been officially released on the devices specification but it is understood that the BlackPad will be wi-fi only at first, connecting to the internet via hotspots rather than over 3G networks.

The BlackPad is also likely to incorporate Blackberry’s signature push email system and could be sold with a wireless keyboard and built in camera to enable video conferencing.

It is the latest tablet device to hit the market as Apple’s tech rivals scramble to keep in touch with Samsung launching its Galaxy Tab and Dell pushing the Streak.

The tablet computer market looks like being more than just a fad with research company Gartner predicting that 20 million such devices will be sold this year, rising to 200 million by 2014.
