Crime gang spends £54,000 on advertising its brothels
Following yesterday’s announcement that classified advertising portal Craiglist plans to voluntarily censor its erotic services section, it has emerged that a crime gang in Scotland spent over £50,000 on advertising the services of its prostitutes.
A Belfast court heard yesterday that the gang, which had brothels in Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff, Glasgow and Aberdeen, trafficked prostitutes and transsexuals from other countries into the UK and spent £54,000 advertising their services.
The operation was discovered by police in Belfast following a raid on a flat in the east of the city, where two women were rescued.
In August, Sheriff Richard Davidson at Dundee Sheriff Court called for a ban of newspaper advertising of prostitution to be enforced.
