Online classifieds service Craigslist has voluntarily censored its erotic services section in the United States following legal pressure and public opprobrium.

The site, which hosts traditional adverts for property, jobs and personals under ‘for sale’ and ‘wanted’ sections, sparked outrage in the States when it branched out into erotic services.

These allow prostitutes and escorts to advertise their services under an adult channel, proving a hit with users and a real money spinner for the business.

However this section has now been taken offline in the States with the word ‘Censored’ stamped across the section in black after a formal letter was sent to Craigslist founder Craig Newmark stating: “No amount of money can justify the scourge of illegal prostitution, and the suffering of the women and children who will continue to be victimised, in the market and trafficking provided by Craigslist.”

In the UK the section remains open for business with ads posted recently on the Manchester site for “massages” and the “Karma Sutra Girls”.
