The Lowry and the Royal Opera House have appointed Manchester agency Hemisphere to design their major new exhibition about The Royal Ballet.

The two venues are hosting an 'Invitation to the Ballet', an exhibition which will tell the story of The Royal Ballet from its foundation by De Valois in the 1920s through to the present day.

Hemisphere will work with the exhibition's curator, Cristina Franchi of the Royal Opera House, to bring her vision of how it should look to life.

And as well as designing the exhibition Hemisphere will also be responsible for its marketing.

The agency has been briefed to create a through-the-line campaign, which will include national and regional press advertisements, posters, leaflets and private view invitations.

Hemisphere senior designer, Steven Wainwright, said: “Invitation to the Ballet is a major exhibition for the Royal Opera House and The Lowry, displaying almost a century’s worth of costumes, photographs, music scores, posters and programmes.

"Our challenge is to bring to life the story of The Royal Ballet, its key figures and ballet’s place in British culture, whilst also illustrating LS Lowry’s appreciation of art, music and dance and how it affected his work."

Hemisphere's exhibition designs will include parts of sets from The Royal Ballet's collections, costumes from productions including The Sleeping Beauty and The Firebird, and multimedia.

It will even include a replica of Dame Margot Fonteyn’s dressing room, complete with her dressing table, make-up cases, personal letters and some rarely seen costumes.

The exhibition will run from 21 October 2010 to 6th March 2011 at The Lowry, with sections of it subsequently being displayed at the Royal Opera House in London from April and three venues in Ipswich from June.

Michael Simpson, The Lowry’s head of visual arts and engagement, said: “Invitation to the Ballet is one of the artistic highlights of The Lowry’s 10th anniversary year and we’re anticipating that this unique exhibition will attract visitors from across the UK.

"We know from our previous projects with Hemisphere that they bring a real feel for the subject matter to their exhibition design as well as having a flair for telling compelling stories.”
