Playboy iPad app preserves its modesty

Playboy has launched a digital version of its infamous magazine for the iPad - but regular readers might notice that there is something missing.

If you pay the $4.99 (£3.20) required to download the app you really will be able to legitimately state that you are buying the magazine for its articles and not for its legendary photo features of naked ladies.

Because there are none.

Playboy has had to self-censor its centrefolds to make sure it adheres to the App store's prudish no-nudity policy. But this means readers are not quite getting the same as a hard copy despite paying a premium price.

As US media website min online puts it: "To be sure, Playboy has put in almost all of the issue, but it leaves out most of the pictorials and cartoons as well as anything more than attractive headshots of its Playmate of the Month. All this for the same price as the hard copy issue."

The reviews section under apps on Apple's store is never a flawless indicator of whether an app is up to scratch but so far downloaders seem to share a similar opinion to min online.

One reviewer said: "The pictures are OK at best, but don't get it if you're expecting any sort of nudity."
