Kanye West may not conform to the stereotypical traits of the friendless geek but it seems fame and fortune don’t necessarily equate to a burdgeoning circle of friends either, on Twitter at least.

A relative latecomer to the social networking platform West only signed up to the service in July 28 but has nevertheless managed to amass over 380,000 followers.

Despite this fecundity West’s corresponding ‘following’ tally tells an altogether more anaemic tale with just one individual selected for the honour – Steven Holmes from Coventry.

Reacting to the news Holmes, who posts under the username ste_101, wrote on West’s page: “Holy s*** bro thx for following!” A post which elicited this impenetrable response from West: “You are the chosen one dun dun dun dun.”

Puzzled fans have been left scratching their heads as to the motivation behind their seemingly improbable friendship with the apparent mundanity of Holmes tweets, which include such nuggets as “flat irn bru and vodka is surprisingly good” and “gonna go and play some poker and get myself in some more debt,” holding few clues.

It may not be a coincidence however that West has a new album due out, prompting the US rapper to go into a publicity overdrive.

West has been in self imposed media exile since September after ill advisedly grabbing a microphone from country singer Taylor Swift at an awards bash and informing the audience that Beyonce ought to have won instead.
