The MagNet mentoring scheme has been launched through magazine publishers across the UK with the aim of supporting and promoting diversity among the industry’s workforce.

Designed to connect student journalists with contacts from within the magazine publishing sector, the scheme, coordinated by the Periodicals Training Council (PTC) and endorsed by trade association for magazine and business media publishers, the PPA, is also being supported by Bauer Media and BBC Magazines.

Final year and postgraduate journalist students from under-represented groups who are studying PTC accredited courses will work with the scheme, where they will be matched with volunteer mentors employed with PPA member companies.

These mentors will provide support and guidance through work experience, networking and practical guidance.

Higher education institutions involved in the project include Cardiff University, City University, Goldsmiths (University of London), the University of Central Lancashire, and the University of Sheffield.

The pilot for the scheme will run for one year and will be followed by an assessment.
