The Roman Catholic Diocese of Salford has this week launched a refreshed website and iPhone app, created by Cuckoo Design, as it looks to drive more people to church.

The Manchester agency has worked with The Diocese since May 2009 when it was tasked to develop a new identity for it to coincide with the opening of Cathedral Centre in September.

Since the initial task, Cuckoo has been working on improving the website for the Diocese in terms of design, funcion and usability, explained Stevie Wheatley, deputy managing director.

Wheatley added: “The iPhone App was an idea we had fairly late in the process. It was a perfect opportunity to make important content even more accessible remotely, gain valuable attention and ultimately drive up visitor numbers. Anything that can help a client reach out and genuinely connect with their audience is hugely beneficial.”

Fr Anthony Kay VG, financial secretary for the Diocese of Salford, explained that Cuckoo was given a brief with three aims; to help people to grow in their life of faith (especially through the areas on prayer and liturgy), to educate people about the teachings of the Church and to inform people about various aspects of the life of the diocese.

“So we set to work on writing lots of articles about what Catholics believe, and why they believe it, knowing that the target audience could be pretty large, and not just confined to those who turn up to Church on a Sunday. We hope that the website will benefit not simply the Catholics in the Diocese of Salford, but the general public at large, particularly those who are interested in knowing, from a balanced point of view, what the Catholic Church actually teaches,” continued Fr Kay.

Both the website and the iPhone app were launched this week.
