Keep Britain Tidy has condemned television and advertising for showing people dropping litter, claiming it is setting a bad example to viewers.

The environmental charity has claimed that adverts and TV programmes which include littering never highlight the consequences of the action, with litter louts going unpunished, citing an episode of crime drama Lewis as a recent culprit.

Helen Bingham from Keep Britain Tidy said that the charity would regularly see images of characters dropping litter, particularly cigarette ends on television.

“Keep Britain Tidy is fighting an ongoing campaign to encourage people to change their behaviour and have some pride in our country,” continued Bingham.

“It is sad that TV companies do not take a lead and help us in our battle to rid England of the litter that can be such an eyesore in neighbourhoods across the country. As an organisation, we would love to see characters in popular shows picking up their litter or being fined for dropping it!

“If life imitates art, as the saying goes, people may take their lead from the things they see on television and think before they throw their rubbish on to the floor,” she concluded.
