‘Anywhere But England’ campaign takes off

A ‘tongue in cheek’ competition which offered entrants chance of a free holiday to the country which lifted the World Cup has been referred to the police as a potential hate crime.

A mall spokesperson insisted however that the 'Anywhere but England' headline was in reference to holidaymakers presumed desire for an exotic destination rather than any underlying animosity toward Rooney and co, adding: “We’re sure we speak for the majority of Scots by wishing England all the best in the World Cup.”

Anti-English marketing has seen a number of businesses north of the border fall foul of equalities legislation with police warning clothing retailer Slanj and entertainment chain HMV over their range of “Anyone But England” T-shirts and items.

Exasperated English fans are getting their own back however, by embracing the SNP – that’s Scotland Not Playing.
