Tom Baillie, the commissioner for children and young people has come under fire after it emerged that he had spent thousands of pounds transferring himself into a cartoon character.

The Daily Express reports that in order to front a project highlighting the rights of youngsters, Baillie spent over £4,000 on creation of a cartoon character of himself as part of a £26,000 package of promotional materials, including £3,000 spent on the creation of 40,000 badges, £3,300 on 10,000 bags and £1,400 on 2,500 stress balls.

A website has also been launched as the focal point of the project.

Critics have called for Ballie to ‘rein in his spending’ amidst public sector cuts, although a spokesperson the commissioner said that demand for the materials was ‘incredibly high ‘ and would be used to reach ‘tens of thousands of youngsters’.
