The programme for this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe has been designed by Whitespace, following a collaboration with Scottish illustrator, Johanna Basford.

The programme and the creative campaign for this year’s festival was designed by the Edinburgh creative agency using illustrations by Basford who took requests and suggestions from Twitter users including a teapot which pours a rainbow, a break-dancing caterpillar and a yo-yo talking to a toothbrush.

Interacting with Twitter users to allow them to inspire the campaign was part of the agency’s decision to stick to the principle of the Fringe, which is that anyone with an idea and a vision can bring their show to Edinburgh.

As a result, users were invited to tell Basford what the most unusual thing was that they would like to see on at this year’s Fringe.

Over two days in March, users would send her their suggestions, which were then illustrated in real-time and then applied to all aspects of the Fringe’s promotional materials including three cover versions of the programme, the ticket, its wallet and envelope, the Fringe’s shop window display and pop-up exhibition panels.

Kath M Mainland, chief executive of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, said: “I am delighted to unveil the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe programme which yet again exemplifies why the Fringe is the world’s leading arts festival. As you’ll see from this year’s programme, Edinburgh in August will be bursting with the most talented artists from every area of the arts world. Nowhere else can you see such a variety of world class talent and range of shows that are guaranteed to engage, enthral, excite and delight.

“As the largest arts festival, the Fringe attracts performers and audiences from every corner of the world. I look forward to welcoming them to Edinburgh and kicking off what is set to be the biggest and most exciting Fringe to date.”
