Weber Shandwick has been appointed international communications provider for the England 2018 World Cup bid.

The announcement comes as the team behind England's bid to host the tournament tries to get back on track following the Mail on Sunday's story about its former chairman, Lord Triesman, at the weekend.

The tabloid alleged that Triesman, then head of the bid team, had made bribery claims against Spain and Russia, who are also bidding to host the tournament. He has since resigned from his position.

Weber Shandwick has provided support to the bid since December 2009 and will now be recognised as an Official Supporter of the bid. The agency was appointed after a competitive tender process.

Simon Greenberg, chief of staff, England 2018, said: "They have played a key role in a number of successful major sporting bids and this was a critical factor in our selection.

“Their appointment will help us increase the strength and momentum of our international campaign globally, delivering across a number of areas.

“We are in this race to win, but our dream can only become a reality if the world is left in no doubt that England 2018 offers world-class stadia and infrastructure; an atmosphere where every player, fan, official, commercial partner feels at home in our multi-cultural society; and the greatest possible legacy for global football development in 2018 and beyond. That is where communications plays a key role."

Weber Shandwick's head of sport, Fiona McLachlan, will lead the account reporting in to Greenberg.

The agency's CEO for Europe, Colin Byrne, said: "Collectively, we are extremely passionate about supporting England 2018’s strong in-house team to help communicate the Bid’s compelling legacy message for global football and society around the world."
