Literary magazine, The Scottish Review of Books, has been redesigned by Glasgow design consultancy Freight.

The new issue of the magazine, which circulates to around 320,000 copies per year, will be distributed with The Herald Newspaper from today (Saturday 15 May).

The new design features a totally revised grid and typography by Freight designer, Stephen Kelman, while the cover also includes an illustration by Freight designer, Derick Carss.

“SRB was launched in 2004 and, although it has been highly successful, it was time for a refresh,” said Adrian Searle, director of Freight. “The magazine is a real heavyweight, like its English counterparts, The London Review of Books and The Times Literary Supplement, but with more meagre resources.”

Searl continued; “Our aim was to better convey the magazine’s authority with clearer typography, using Miller and Futura, and to provide more space for the editorial to breathe. We’ve simplified the grid to make it far more flexible, so it handles the magazine’s wide range of content better.”

Following the launch, Freight has been contracted to produce another three issues. In these, cover illustrations will be provided by illustration students from Glasgow School of Art.
