Vacant shop windows in Newcastle have been used to promote the city and display some home-grown creative talent in a project organised by Newcastle’s business improvement champions NE1.

NE1, with funding from Newcastle City Council, approached Newcastle College to suggest a collaboration with students.

In January 2010, NE1 set a brief to first and second year students to come up with a captivating display that reflects what Newcastle has to offer. Students were asked to produce artwork to represent “Their Newcastle”.

A verbal brief was delivered outlining the aims of the project and a presentation was given on the work NE1 Ltd is involved in, delivering business improvements for the city centre. Students were then given a two week deadline to submit their creative concepts and treatments.

Over 45 students entered the competition, however, the work of Tynemouth based, Ashleigh Patterson, a 19 year old first year student was selected for her typography inspired entry.

Ashleigh’s winning design was based around three panels of quotes all presented in speech bubbles highlighting what people say is great about Newcastle. Each panel was devoted to three areas of Newcastle life, one the arts, the other shopping and finally the nightlife. Ashleigh’s work is now being exhibited in the windows of the former Envy store on Market Street and will remain in situ for at least six months.

This is the second time that NE1 has put vacant shop windows to good use. Earlier this year, NE1 teamed up with Boots, the Monument Mall and the Globe Gallery to arrange the installation of the Simon Donald- backed Crunch exhibition at the old Boots store at the monument.
