What happens when you get the old heave ho? Many of us might end up on the sofa enduring Jeremy Kyle. But Barrie Robinson and Tim Jarvis, a creative team, used their new found time to write a book.

“'You will not make it in advertising by reading this book' is a helping hand to all the creatives who didn’t go to Soho. Or did, and got told to sod off back up the M1. And in the gallery to the left you will find a few extracts from it...

"We had a lot of students coming to see us for book crits and advice. Every now and again, the advice we gave was useful. The book is just a collection of things we wished someone told us when we were students. And back then, you couldn’t find a textbook about the industry in the north. But now you can.

"Call us naive, but we got into advertising to be creative and to have some fun. And when you’re trying to think of 12 ways to say Half Price sofas, you need some kind of release. And that’s all this is really. We’re not trying to be Paul Arden, we’re just trying to cope.

"Now don’t get us wrong, we love the north. We chose to be here. But we all know it could be so much better. Especially for young creatives trying to get a foot in the door. So have a read and we hope you like it. And in case you’re wondering, yes, we will stoop as low to tell you we’re available for freelance."
