Creative and marketing companies in Birmingham have joined forces to help students get a foot on the career ladder.

Agencies including McCann Erickson, WAA, Willoughby PR, Clusta and Made Media are backing B-Hive, a scheme which awards paid work placements to students and graduates from Birmingham.

The scheme was founded by recruitment firm Pitch Consultants and last year it awarded 12 students and graduates from Birmingham with paid work placements.

This year Pitch has teamed up with Marketing Birmingham to offer twice as many work placements across four categories: marketing, PR, web design and graphic design.

There will be 24 placements in total offered in-house at companies including the COI and Aga and with Birmingham agencies.

Ollie Purdom, director of Pitch Consultants, said: "Potential employers are always looking for solid experience to support academic qualifications, and in a highly competitive job market, B-Hive gives students and graduates a rare opportunity to get that experience with the best in the business.

“After a successful first year, the partnership with Marketing Birmingham will bring the additional support that B-Hive needs to develop even further."

Dave Hodgson, marketing director at Marketing Birmingham, added: "Birmingham has a multitude of creative agencies working on high profile accounts, from small firms to large and established companies. It is therefore essential that we retain the best graduates the city has to offer to ensure this industry continues to grow from strength to strength.”
