Mark Smith, MD of online publisher S1 talks to The Drum

Now owned by Newsquest Herald & Times, the brand was initially launched as s1Jobs by SMG before its sale in 2003 to Gannet along with the rest of SMG’s publishing interests.

Since then s1 has launched sister sites to its recruitment site including s1homes, s1play, s1cars, scottishlegaljobs.com, scottishretailjobs.com, scottishhospitalityjobs.com and Scottish Clearing.

The Drum took time out to speak to s1's managing director Mark Smith ahead of plans to launch a new initiative on s1Cars next week, along with a new radio and press advertising campaign created by The Leith Agency.

Smith also talks about the launch of the company nine years ago and how the business as grown. He says that allowing s1 to operate as an independent company over the years has allowed it to thrive, and says that other media companies who have launched companies have made the ‘mistake’ of not doing the same. He admits that while revenue through recruitment site s1jobs is down 40% year on year for 2009, the property section of s1homes is doing well, perhaps surprising so.
