The Drum has learned that Barkers has entered a consultation period of three months as it reviews its recruitment operations across the UK.

The company, which has offices in London, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Slough, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol is currently looking to downscale its recruitment advertising business as a result of the current economic climate, but it is understood will not be downgrading its advertising or PR operations.

Christina Kelly, managing director of Barkers PR Scotland, confirmed the consultancy period: “As the UK is currently experiencing challenges to the economy, many businesses are finding it necessary to make employees redundant rather than take on new people. As the main part of the Barkers group is predominantly involved with recruitment, this is having an impact on our business model and consequently a review of all operations is being undertaken.”

Kelly continued: “We have decided to undertake a 90 day consultation on our structure and resourcing needs going forward and as a consequence of this some staff across the UK may, unfortunately, have to be made redundant. The exact number and their locations will not be clear until the end of the consultation, but no changes are envisaged to the Social Marketing and Public Relations divisions of Barkers Scotland.”

It is understood that at the moment there are no fixed numbers of the number of people across the group which will be made redundant.

The recruitment business of Barkers Scotland is based at its Edinburgh office which it is understood will continue to operate.

Yesterday it was revealed that Barkers Scotland had been appointmented as one of 50 agencies onto the Central Office of Information’s newly formed Strategic Consultancy Frameworks for Marketing and Brand Strategy.
