Staff at the Glasgow office of Trinity Mirror have been informed that a third of its editorial workforce will be made redundant as the company looks to merge the Daily Record and Sunday Mail.

An announcement made at lunchtime today stated that up to 70 journalists will leave, almost a third of the 256 editorial staff, as the Trinity Mirror papers are integrated in a move which will see Bruce Waddle become editor-in-chief of the titles alongside the introduction of online management content system ConentWatch.

10 staff have already departed, with 60 more voluntary redundancies to be sought following a 30 day consultation period.

The remaining journalists will be required to work across both titles in the future.

Alan Rennie, editor of the Sunday Mail has become editorial development director at Trinity Mirror, which will see him work on national titles including the Daily Mirror and the People.

It is understood that the initial changes of the senior editorial team will include free titles the Glaswegian and Business7, as well as the Record PM.

Trinity Mirror introduced a similar move in Birmingham last year, when it cut 65 jobs and created one editorial team for the Birmingham Post, Birmingham Mail, Sunday Mercury, Coventry Telegraph and 40 weeklies.

Mark Hollinshead, managing director of Trinity Mirror's National Division, said: "These are extraordinary days in our industry.

"No business, including ours, has escaped the economic downturn. This reorganisation plus investment in technology and retraining of staff will better position us for the future in what will be a dramatically different media economy and commercial environment."

An NUJ meeting of staff in the union 'chapel' is planned for tomorrow afternoon.
