The Drum has learned that Jemella, parent company of hair care product brand GHD has made several redunancies just weeks after dismissing speculation over a fall in sales.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed to The Drum: "Jemella Ltd has reviewed the resources and structure required by the UK business to deliver our business objectives.

As a result of this review, the company has identified 33 roles which are now redundant across our three sites in the UK."

They continued to say: "We continue to invest in new jobs worldwide and have identified around 65 new positions globally. Our head count by the end of 2009 is predicted to increase to approximately 700 employees."

An insider told The Drum that at a company meeting, those wearing red name badges were into a room and told they were to being removed. It is thought that the cuts have been made to its head office and sale teams.

The news comes after the company denied that its MD, Martin Penny departed before Christmas because of a fall in sales in the company's products.
