Online brand s1 has announced that it has appointed the founder and former CEO of Weeworld, Mike Kinsella to the role of web producer.

Kinsella will take on the responsibility for innovation and development across a number of the brand’s platforms including recruitment site s1Jobs.

Kinsella told The Drum that he was happy to be joining s1 and that he had no plans to continue to run Weeworld on the side having hired an American management team to expand it into the US.

“Today Weeworld.com has 25m users, making the Glasgow-built Weemee both the world’s first and most popular internet avatar.

“Most of the company’s activities are now based in North America where Weeworld was recently recognised by internet analytics firm Comscore as 2008’s fastest growing social network.”

Mark Smith, managing director of s1, said: “We’re delighted to have secured someone with a world class track record in online innovation.

“Mike made Weeworld one of Scotland’s most successful online exports – one that now attracts some 25m users. I’m sure that this entrepreneurial flair will mean he feels very at home with s1, as we look to add even more value for our users and advertisers.”

The appointment of Kinsella comes in the same week that Stephen Currie was announced as s1’s head of sales.

Currie, 36, who will join s1 in January to take over the £10m+ revenue line, was formerly regional sales director with iconic Scottish lager brand Tennent’s.
