The British Council has appointed Consolidated PR as its retained public relations agency in Scotland, following a four-way pitch run by the Recommended Agency Register.

The agency's remit is to work with British Council Scotland to raise the organisation's profile and ensure that Scottish partners are fully engaged and represented across global projects.

The British Council, which celebrates its 75-year anniversary in 2009, has over 7000 people working in 110 countries to help build intercultural understanding between the UK and other countries through the arts, education and training, science and technology, sport, good governance and human rights.

Roy Cross, director of British Council Scotland, said a "rich programme" of work was planned for 2009 and the organisation is looking to raise its profile in Scotland during its anniversary year.

Will Holt, Edinburgh-based director, Consolidated PR, said: "The British Council has an amazing network of offices all over the world and our campaign will connect Scotland with these countries by ensuring that Scottish organisations, such as colleges and creative industries, can benefit from these global links.

"It'll be press work, stakeholder work and much more."

Steve Antoniewicz, managing director, Recommended Agency Register, explained that the intermediary had put forward four agencies which were "highly-rated" in its research before Consolidated came out on top.

An initial priority for Consolidated PR will be to promote Scotland-Kolkata Connections 2009, a year-long series of events commemorating the cultural links between Scotland and India's third-largest city.
