In celebration of the musical heritage of Salford, Manchester design agency Creative Spark has been commissioned by Salford City Council to create a music map highlighting musical hotspots across the city.

Salford has a rich musical history and the music map aims to cover all types of music across the ages from The Smiths to the Ting Tings, Russell Watson to New Order. The map will highlight musical ‘hotspots’ in the city, such as venues, birthplaces, concert halls and iconic locations.

Following the success of its recent work for Salford City Council, Creative Spark pitched against other North West agencies to capture the variety and scope of Salford’s musical landscape.

Local music expert and author David Nolan was commissioned to lead the research for the music map, but local residents’ memories were also vital in building up a picture of the sounds of Salford. A MySpace page was set up for people to add to the debate and discuss their favorite Salford bands, venues and gigs www.myspace.com/salfordmusicmap.

The map will be handed out free during Salford’s musical events taking place later this year and got its first outing at the recent exhibition at Salford Museum and Art Gallery, Quiffs, Riffs and Tiffs. It was also featured on the BBC’s Inside Out programme.
