Erstwhile DJ and firebrand politician Tommy Sheridan is to sue UTV Radio, the owners of the Talk 107 radio station, alleging a breach of contract following their axing of Sheridan.

Sheridan was fired unexpectedly in April, and claims that the redundancy settlement offered to him is in breach of his contract of employment, which he says entitles him to three months salary based on his regular programme output of three weekly broadcasts.

It is understood the payment actually made to Sheridan was calculated on the basis of a single programme per week only. Sheridan is pursuing UTV for the difference he claims is owed to him, understood to amount to approximately £6,000. He has instructed papers to be lodged at the Sheriff Court in Edinburgh, which will be served on UTV on Thursday morning to initiate the action.

Sheridan is being backed by the National Union of Journalists, whose Scottish Organiser Paul Holleran is representing Sheridan in his action.

"It is a clear legal position. I am nonplussed as to why UTV think that they can ride roughshod over us," Holleran told the Firm.

"We have had a few run ins with UTV, and this is just the latest."

A spokesman from Talk 107 said the station had no comment at this time.
