The Scottish Football Association has said that it is ‘confident’ that it will have a new sponsor for the Scottish Cup, ahead of its kick off in September.

David Kells, managing director of national stadium, Hampden Park told The Drum that the SFA had been close to agreeing a deal earlier in the summer with one brand, thought to be in the energy sector, but that feel through.

As a result, Kells said that the association is now speaking to several brands to become the headline sponsor of the competition, with a fee thought to be £1.25million a year.

“We’re in talks with a few companies at the moment and we want to progress that because the draw for the first round is coming up, at the end of September. There isn’t a fantastic amount of time but we are confident because it is such a good property,” commented Kells.

Lager brand Tennents was the competitions sponsor for 18 years before becoming the official sponsor of the Scottish National Team two years ago.

Last season saw the SFA act as the main sponsor for the competition after failing to find a brand willing to pay the price of sponsorship, with the association paying the teams what they would have earned had a headline sponsor been in place.
