Following much industry speculation, Gary Smith, former director of 1576 has announced that he is to start a new marketing agency, Hush.

Smith left 1576 in September of last year having spent three years in his role as joint managing director.

The Drum has learned that he will be joined by Ian White who has resigned as head of direct at The Leith Agency, but is currently on ‘gardening leave’, as well as Niall Fogarty, both of whom previously worked alongside Smith at Draft Worldwide.

It is understood that all three will be directors of Hush, having each invested financially in the venture, with Smith acting as chief executive, White as managing director and Fogarty as commercial director.

Smith told The Drum that the agency would also be recruiting a creative and an account person in the next few weeks to bolster the team.

He also said that the agency was speaking to six or seven ‘potential clients’ who would be handing over briefs in the coming months.

Speaking of the launch he added: “I’m not in this for three years or five years, I’m in this for the rest of my career, so it’s an important step for me as well as the other guys.”

Hush will be located at offices in Edinburgh’s Charlotte Square, where Smith says there is enough room for the agency to hold up to 20 staff.
