The judging panel consisted of chairman Mike McKenna; creative director J Walter Thompson; senior designer Emma Slater of Williams Murray Hamm; Nick Welch of Essence Communications; Lloyd Stanton, managing director of Comedy Radio; and creative consultant Kit Marr.

Stanton adds to the awards’ laughter credentials, having worked with some of the biggest names in comedy, including French and Saunders, Rik Mayall and Ben Elton. As a director at Paramount Comedy Channel, he worked with Matt Lucas and the Monty Python team. He has also collaborated with Stephen Fry, and has made a film, Redemption Road, starring John Thomson. Kit Marr, a well-known face in the Scottish advertising industry through the 80s and 90s, meanwhile, has had stints at AMV, BMP, CDP, Davidson Pearce, Y&R, Greys and Rapier.

The idea behind the Chip Shop Awards was born 15 years ago in north Wales. Barnacles, a tired old chippy, was going under. Cue the arrival of two young creatives. One brilliant, but free, re-branding exercise later, a born-again Barnacles was busting the chops of every new fast food joint for miles. As for those canny creatives, their cocky,

x-rated campaign did for fish suppers what Bill Clinton did for cigars. They netted a catch of trophies, then went on to live happily ever after as creative directors of some of the biggest agencies around.

This year’s awards ceremony will be held on 23 August at Underbelly in Edinburgh. Reservations can be made by contacting Katy Thomson (katy.thomson@carnyx.com) on 0141 559 6062 or by downloading a booking form from www.chipshopawards.com.
