Karrol Marketing's Grand Prix winner the Ascent of Cabourn.
After the success of the Scottish agencies at last year’s Roses Design awards, there must have been high hopes of a repeat performance. Unfortunately, there wasn’t one. While, last year, BD-Tank scooped the Grand Prix award – amongst others – and a broad cross-section of design agencies in Scotland were represented amongst the winners and commendations, this year was a different story. The event itself, which is now in its third year, was at the Palace Hotel in Manchester, attracting more than 360 people. However, of the 18 awards and 23 commendations in the design categories (discounting the architecture work) that were handed out on the night, only six awards ventured north of the border, and even then, that is not wholly accurate, as four went to Elmwood who had submitted all their work through the English office.Graven Images and Curious Oranj were the only other companies in Scotland to pick up silverware for their design on the Re: Motion Exhibition at the Lighthouse and Fusion Nightclub, respectively.
Picking up commendations this time around were Pure, Blackwatch Productions and Skakel and Skakel, along with Elmwood and Graven Images, again.
This year it was the turn of Karol Marketing to scoop the top award on the night, the Design Grand Prix, for its corporate literature, “The Ascent of Cabourn”, for client Nigel Cabourn. Also picking up more than their fair share of trophies were Love and Brahm, with True North being awarded the Chairman’s Award on the night.
The Roses Design Awards judging panel this year consisted of Bruce Duckworth of Turner Duckworth (Chairman); Julian Dickinson of HarrimanSteel; NB Studio’s Ian Pierce; Jason Gregory from GBH; David Kimpton of Hat-trick; The Partners’ Nina Jenkins; and Adam Whitaker of Duffy London
Speaking of the Chairman’s Award, which was received by True North, Duckworth said: “The award is given to the announcement card for a fireman who has returned to his original occupation of a painter and decorator. The announcement card is a simple, effortless solution using charming wit and carried off with just the right amount of execution detail. A perfect example of a great idea executed beautifully, it shows that to produce great work you don't need big budgets and glamorous clients. Just a great idea, wit, style and, most importantly, a sense of fun.”
The Grand Prix prize went to the small book produced by Karol Marketing, "The Ascent of Cabourn”, a catalogue for limited edition clothing inspired by the anniversary of the ascent on Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary 50 years ago.
The judges said of the work: “The book beautifully mimics a well worn copy of the original account by Hillary of his remarkable feat, using the original illustrations to create an atmosphere of authenticity and totally appropriate product shots to show the details of the clothes for sale. The little book has every detail nailed, from the battered and torn cover to the details and presentation of even the smallest woven labels in this extraordinary product range. The design is a true labour of love (even the inside of the slip cover is printed to look worn and aged to make the presentation believable) from top to bottom and front to back, it is delightful.
“The purpose of this booklet was to make the clothing range desirable and it is a true success. This year there was one piece of work that the jury wanted to take home with them as they left the judging; it was this highly desirable, amazing, little book.”
The architecture categories saw Hodder Associates receive the Grand Prix award for its work for Cartmel Peninsula Recreational Trust, while the Best Domestic Project was presented to OMI Architects, with Hodder Associates winning the title for Best Commercial Project.
