Clyde and Forth Press has emerged as a surprise bidder in the race to buy the Northern Ireland newspaper titles put up for sale by Trinity Mirror boss Sly Bailey.

The Dunfermline-based group, owner of the Greenock Telegraph, Slough Observer and Clydebank Post, is reported to be one of the bidders lodging interest in the nine Northern Irish newspaper titles, which Trinity Mirror, owner of the Daily Record, hopes to raise as much as £35m from.

Other parties interested in the newspapers include Scottish Radio Holdings, Archant and venture capitalists 3i, whose bid is thought to be overseen by David Montgomery, former Mirror boss.

Clyde and Forth Press is headed by Northern Ireland-born Deirdre Romanes, who recently acquired the Meath Chronicle.
