Based in Dundee’s Technology Park, Avian is Tayside’s largest specialist design agency, employing 20 people and providing a mix of integrated marketing services, including market research & strategy, graphic design, advertising and web development.

The company’s origins lie in conventional graphic design and advertising but this was enhanced three years ago with the acquisition of a specialist web development and e-business company.

George Gall, managing director, said: “ Our strength, and USP, lies in the fact that we operate internally as two dedicated teams – one creating conventional media responses on a Macintosh platform, the other developing new media solutions in a PC environment. Both development teams are co-ordinated by account directors, allowing us to present a unified face both to our clients and to the marketplace. This approach allows us to deliver integrated communications solutions irrespective of the media used. “

This strategy has successfully placed Avian on a very firm footing within the Scottish design scene. Recently appointed by Scottish Enterprise as suppliers of design and marketing collateral for their activities in the “Services To Industry” sector, Avian works for a number of Scotland’s blue chip organizations, including VisitScotland, Lloyds TSB Bank Scotland, Walkers Shortbread, National Trust for Scotland and the Scottish Waste Awareness Group.

With considerable expertise in the tourism and leisure sector, Avian has developed two major initiatives on behalf of VisitScotland. Walkingwild, originally developed for Highlands of Scotland Tourist Board, is a web portal promoting hill walks throughout Scotland and features dynamic database-driven information on all walks, maps and directional information, accommodation, travel and associated offers.

The site, supported by associated campaign material, is highly successful and the “model” has been used recently to create the CyclingScotland portal detailing Scotland-wide cycle routes targeted at Scotland’s cycling community. The company’s “integrated” skills are also demonstrated in the successful work for the National Trust for Scotland. Responsible for all the Trust’s property marketing materials, Avian, through the development and implementation of several targeted campaigns, has seen the client’s visitor numbers increase, despite the recognized downturn in the UK and Scottish tourism industry.

Scott McCallum, design director, explained: “Over the course of the last year we have made a conscious effort to push more aggressively into the B2B, commercial sector. Our significant ‘wins’ over the summer, with both Scottish Enterprise and Lloyds TSB Bank Scotland, for whom the agency is developing new brand material, coming on board as clients, helps strengthen the depth of our creative portfolio and allows us the opportunity to expand further within this sector. We are looking forward to the introduction of several new initiatives for a number of clients over the course of the next few months – watch this space!”
