A new effort asks people named after the hurricane that wiped out power, homes and everything in its path on Puerto Rico – Maria – to help raise funds for those affected by their hurricane namesake.

‘Marias vs Maria’ is a hurricane relief initiative spearheaded by the Community. The agency created a website that calls all the people of the world named Maria (or Mary) to join the movement by donating $1.00, spreading the word to other Marias by sharing or tagging them in their social media channels. However, everyone – regardless of name – can take part in helping to restore the island.

All proceeds from the donations collected on the site go to Unidos por Puerto Rico – an initiative brought forth by the First Lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rosselló, in collaboration with the private sector. The purpose is to provide aid and support to those affected in Puerto Rico by the passage of the recent hurricanes.
