A new, design-centered collaboration between Motif, an extension for photos on macOS, and Sub Rosa, a NYC-based strategy and design agency, has just been launched. Motif is a new consumer brand and software extension, which allows users to create beautifully curated photo books, calendars and cards.

Motif approached Sub Rosa with the task of building an entirely new brand for the extension, one that differentiated it from the pack along the following points: speed, including quick photo analysis and product personalization; image analysis, including intuitive photo selection; photo book auto-flow and auto-layout; interactive layouts plus centering and cropping.

This was Sub Rosa’s first collaboration with the brand. Along with developing the strategic foundation for the brand, Sub Rosa also developed a design system equally well suited for a digital and physical experience, including: a fresh, forward-facing logo, emphasizing the brand’s positioning while playing into minimalist concepts; an elegant color palette, intentionally designed so that the primary colors can be used interchangeably.

A new graphic system, which when separated from the wordmark, provides a dynamic opportunity to feature and frame content. Pairing this system with the logomark, the patterns and angular lines further strengthen and bolster the brand and can be applied on packaging and book covers, as well as on digital platforms.

A new visual identity and web design, through which Sub Rosa was able to bring the brand “to life,” from a marketing standpoint.
