BBC Northern Ireland called upon young adult audiences to consider ‘your present has a past’ as it launched The Troubles at 50, a compilation of programmes and documentaries covering key events and themes of Northern Irish history.

This bold, impactful out-of-home and social media campaign aimed to make historical content relevant and creatively appealing to a younger, tech-savvy audience who consume media across multiple platforms and streaming options.

The campaign uses fragmented visuals of archive photography and video which focus on the human side of the conflict, reinforced with poignant and thought-provoking messaging: ‘Your present has a past’, ‘Is conflict in your blood?’ and ‘Do you feel the weight of your past?’

This visual style reflects an understanding of the polarising and sensitive nature of the subject matter within Northern Ireland.

The campaign ran in the final weeks of 2019 on outdoor sites across the region and on social media channels. It was created by BBC Northern Ireland and Stereo Creative in London.
