Japanese skincare giant Shiseido has created an interactive installation that uses deep-tech to showcase how users can break the boundaries of time to experience aging instantaneously and non-linearly.

The installation allows two people to look through a digital mirror and see what they would like in the future and what they looked like in the past.

Called “Beyond Time” and created by R/GA Tokyo, the installation is based on decades of Shiseido skin research that were combined with facial data capture and processing technology to show how people look during various life stages in real-time.

The 3D Facial Age Simulation Engine developed by R/GA looks at 1,300 facial data points, and compares them to a vast database of face models, enabling a scientifically-accurate aging simulation in real-time.

“The role of the new Global Innovation Center is to promote innovation by connecting consumers to knowledge and technologies,” said Naomi Yamamoto, the chief creative officer at Shiseido.

“Beyond Time brings that purpose to life in a deeply emotional way, by letting people explore the boundaries of time and beauty through a unique experience that is, at heart, driven by data.”

The installation will be located at Shiseido’s global innovation centre that houses a research institute and experiential space known as S/PARK, in Yokohama.
