On National Tequila Day, tequila maker Jose Cuervo is honoring its own two-century history by blending it with that of the US, making George Washington a tequila fan.

Cuervo, which has a more than 220-year-old legacy with its Jose Cuervo Tradicional, worked with CP+B LA to bring founding father George Washington to life again to toast tequila’s founding father. In a series of social videos, the ads animate Washington at crucial points in history. In one, he searches for his Cuervo Tradicional and finds John Adams using it in a cocktail shaker. In another, he remarks about the Boston Tea Party, then asks if the tequila is safe while drinking a Cuervo cocktail. While not historically accurate, they do celebrate the Mexican drink as being part of US history.

The campaign has a live activation as well, putting Cuervo into the hands of a popular George Washington statue at Washington, DC’s National Harbor. People are encouraged to get their picture taken with the toasting statue. Washington is also taking over Jose Cuervo’s social feeds for the day, posting photo and videos featuring paintings of the president and his ‘favorite tequila’.
