The first Macintosh I used, I could see that I'd never have to draw another page grid ever again. And to be able to do your own typesetting... I jumped right in like a duck to water. Today the world is poorer for his passing.
This is such sad news. Having not seen Jim for around fifteen years, I bumped into him last summer at the supermarket checkout. He hadn't changed that much but he took a second or two to recognise me - I guess the years were etched in our faces. But it was as if we'd just spoken the day before and we sort of arranged to meet up at a local open-mike session that night. He didn't show and I didn't get his number or know how to contact him again...
What I'll remember about Jim -
Turning up at my band rehearsal and gradually getting into playing and then recording his songs. We happily ditched our stuff in favour of his.
Driving him and Will (hi there Will) around the Highlands scouting photo locations. We got all the way to the tip of Tongue before noticing the trail of smoke that must have been following us for hours, if not days. With the cylinder head cracked, we pushed the car around and freewheeled all the way back down to the local garage, caught the post bus to Inverness and hired the biggest car they had.
Asking me to stand in on bass guitar with only a few hours to learn the set, for a charity gig at Buster Browns. As there was free booze for the band, it was a bit of a blur on stage with Jim telling everyone to turn it up loud. I don't know how it sounded or how it went down with the audience, but we had a night to remember. If a little hazily.
He was always a pleasure to work with - a scholar and a gentleman.
Such sad news.
'A study into the social interactions of Facebook users has found that most people receive more interactions such as “likes”, tags and messages than they receive.'
What? Just stopped reading right there.
