Rough around the edges? The Drum investigates the Yorkshire agency scene

Having worked in and around the agency scene in the North for over 20 years, here at Network Marketing we are seeing the strongest demand for 5 years for account handling and creative. The demand for skills though has definitely shifted with a bias towards retail and digital. PR seems to have taken the biggest hit with a number of large, established agencies having closed shop or reduced significantly in size - perhaps digital has just replaced some of that market? PR is far more fragmented now too. North vs South debate? From our experience of recruiting in central London there is a chasm of difference in the size of the market and availability of agency. However, with the obvious major networked agency exceptions, I am not sure a mainstream medium sized agency in London does anything different to a similar sized agency in Yorkshire. The difference, however, seems to be in agency culture. Remember the good old days (Malcolm Cowing, Nathan Lane et al) of throwing caution to the wind on Thursday night, sometimes Wednesday and always Friday, and just seeing where the evening takes you after work. No plans, but you all leave work and head for the nearest watering hole. Things happened - stories are still retold decades on. This still happens in London but not so much in the North. I think, in a way, agencies in the North have lost something by no longer having this in their DNA. On a final note, having ridden the tubes frequently recently, I have to say Q.O.L. has a big part to play in living and working in Yorkshire. Jonathan

Highly organised spammers driving fake Twitter accounts

Data Insight in the 'digital' world is even more interesting than in the old fashioned DM world. DM insights were pretty straight forward - segment database, mail out, assess response, reiterate - we didn't think about who was 'talking about us or even 'listening'! But in the digital world there are so many more variables and this has to be a real area of competitive advantage for any consultancy who can truly measure the 'value' of digital/social.

The Marketing Weak Award: Go Outdoors - Walking The Dog

Perhaps instead of denigrating advertising campaigns because they're not the most creative in the world, the ROI should be the priority - know the brief first and then judge the campaign...
