Australia’s Liberal Party has appointed former Penthouse magazine Pet Robyn Preston to its ruling New South Wales executive.

She was elected as councillor for Hills Shire, and takes a seat on the executive alongside Prime Minister Tony Abbott and state Premier Barry O'Farrell, who hold ex officio positions.

''We already have an ex-seminarian in Tony Abbott and now we'll have a former Penthouse model. Who said the Liberal party isn't a broad church?'' a Liberal party source said.

Her past as a nude model for Penthouse magazine arose during her pre-selection. She was returned to the seat during last year’s local government elections, despite Hill Shire having a reputation as a ‘bible belt’ seat.

Preston herself made no comment except to say that it was ''an internal party matter''.

Former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke held the Guinness world record for speed-drinking a yard of ale before his entry into political life.
