Peter James' Brighton interactive map

Project Clients: Pan Macmillan

What if you could turn a map of Brighton into a crime showcase?

Peter James is an award winning crime novelist best known for his Brighton-based Roy Grace series. Readers of his books are known to revel in his detailed references to the city throughout his novels, sparking the idea for an interactive map of the south coast city where fans could explore the sinister characters, scenes and storylines.

Over 100 locations along with relevant text ‘snippets’ were selected for use and mapped out using the Google API . Images and (where suitable) video content were combined with suitably sinister design to ensure fans and newbies could get a real feel for the collection. Two modes  of navigation were developed; EXPLORE for full map exploration, and WALK for those looking to take part in their own Brighton tour. Standard social widgets, PDF downloads and ‘email a friend’ were also deployed.

Responsive design was the perfect solution to ensuring compatibility across device – as our first responsive project, we continue to use this method across a number of other projects and would recommend it.  Likewise, Google maps API is a fantastic tool to use for interactive map building, however keeping walks to an 8 location maximum can help reduce cost!
