D&AD New Blood: Norwich and Gloucestershire students stand out among UK's finest creative graduates

July 8, 2013 | 3 min read

Continuing our series of student show reviews, the team at strategic design agency BrandOpus pick their favourite work from this year's D&AD New Blood exhibition, which brings together graduating talent from all over the UK.

In a packed cordoned off section of Spitalfields market on a sweltering English summer's day, it takes good design (and a drop of free beer) to catch an agency's eye after a full day's work. But good design there was, and plenty of it. Our team explored the collection of ideas from the freshest creative minds in graphic design, advertising, digital media, illustration, photography, visual communication and other commercial creative arts. Here are some of our favourite pieces...

Morgan Swaine, Norwich University of the Arts

Chosen by Edward Clark, design director, BrandOpus Among the many strong pieces of work on show this year, the work of Morgan Swain really stood out to me. Cholula Mexican sauce, a branded packaging project was a key piece to her show; both playful and witty, it demonstrated both a keen eye for ideas and an appreciation for on-shelf standout. Other work included a pleasing typographic solution to rebrand J2O, offering a clean and elegant solution, timeless in its simplicity. The Yellow Pencil that sat alongside her name was garnered for her solution to D&AD’s Baptiste student brief, a neat addition to a graduate portfolio which promises to be well viewed this summer.

Sam Bristow-Bell, Norwich University of the Arts

Chosen by Roschfa Khosravi, designer, BrandOpusI loved the Mikado rebranding because the design drew inspiration from the pick-up sticks game of the same name and Japonism and resulted in a fun and witty integration of the product and branding. The idea of turning the pack into a story is a great premise for online games and merchandising. I think Sam Bristow-Bell, design student at NUA, saw fun and adventure at the heart of Mikado that would not only intrigue kids but adults too.

Beverley Lisa Hall, University of Gloucestershire

Chosen by Karen Vance, designer, BrandOpusBeverley's work caught my eye for her creative naming, and innovative packaging format.Cahoots Luxury Smoothies plays on the concept of the secret partnership of flavours. An exciting NPD drinks format with two flavours blending together once opened. For me this is exactly the sort of idea we would see coming out of a creative workshop. Her choice of naming was sophisticated and unique. Upon speaking to Beverley she was articulate about her work and hugely enthusiastic about getting into the packaging industry, we look forward to seeing more...
