In one of the most destructive hurricane seasons ever, assistance in the aftermath of a hurricane has been difficult to come by, especially for those areas of the Caribbean that were devastated.

Marias vs Maria

Marias vs Maria to help raise money for Puerto Rico relief efforts

After Maria ripped through the island, the people of Puerto Rico are still struggling, trying to get aid and financial support through any channel possible.

A new effort asks people who share a name with the hurricane that wiped out power, water, homes and everything in its path on Puerto Rico to help raise funds for those affected by their hurricane namesake.

‘Marias vs Maria’ is a hurricane relief initiative spearheaded by the Community. The agency created a website that calls all the people of the world named Maria (or Mary) to join the movement by donating $1.00, spreading the word to other Marias by sharing or tagging them in their social media channels. However, everyone – regardless of name – can take part in helping to restore the island.

All proceeds from the donations collected on the site go to Unidos por Puerto Rico – an initiative brought forth by the First Lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rosselló, in collaboration with the private sector. The purpose is to provide aid and support to those affected in Puerto Rico by the passage of the recent hurricanes.

The effort is to show that the millions of Marias (and their supporters) around the world together can have more impact than Hurricane Maria. The website states that: “In the US alone there are more than six million people named Maria or Mary. Dozens of millions if you count compound names. Globally, we’re talking about many millions of people. If every Maria around the world donates just one dollar, we could help people affected by the hurricane, turning the name Maria into a synonym of generosity, instead of tragedy.”

Launched on October 9, the site has so far raised $1,263 at the time of publishing. People are encouraged to interact with the drive on social media through the #MariasvsMaria hashtag.
