Uber’s newly installed head of leadership, Frances Frei, has stated her belief that fallen CEO Travis Kalanick, forced out of the job following a succession of scandals, could yet be redeemed - though pointedly refused to be drawn on whether a return to some form of leadership role is on the cards.

Uber’s leadership head believes redemption is possible for fallen CEO Travis Kalanick

Frei was parachuted in as part of efforts to rebuild trust and confidence in the ride hailing business after it was battered by a succession of embarrassing scandals, culminating in the departure of Kalanick himself, but believes that Kalanick may yet redeem himself in similar fashion to Steve Jobs or Bill Gates.

Speaking to Recode Frei said: “I think that he should make the decision that he wants. He’s a board member. He knows the history of the company. I would not presume to make the decision for him.”

Uber’s woes include a number of sexual harassment allegations; a theft lawsuit from Alphabet’s self-driving car subsidiary Waymo, alleged sexual harrassment and a revolving door of senior executive departures.

As a former leadership expert at Harvard Business School, Frei was scathing of Uber’s personnel procedures; including failing to train managers, establish a culture of accountability or even establish a functioning human resources system.
