Enterprising developer Abhishek Singh has created an augmented reality experience for the Microsoft HoloLens, an unapproved experience that underlines the potential that Nintendo and other games developers may one day see in the space.

A YouTube video of Singh’s AR demo showed an interactive world filled with the usual goomba enemies, pipes and power-ups that will be instantly recognisable to those familiar to the series.

The first level of the iconic 1985 game has been recreated in 3D vectors and is fully interactive, giving players a new way to look at the level.

Nintendo has already dipped its toes into AR with the part ownership of Niantic’s runaway success Pokemon Go, but having side-swiped into mobile territory with the Switch (which once upon a time was rumoured to encapsulate VR and AR elements), the company will no doubt be keeping a close eye on developments in the space.

Dressed as Mario Singh tried out the level in New York’s Central Park where commuters barely blinked at the odd scenes unfolding in front of them.
